Art in August: First Friday at M-AAA

Exhibition + Live Music

For First Friday on August 7, Mid-America Arts Alliance is pleased to present an exhibition preview plus live music from Kansas City's own Katy Guillen & The Girls. This month's LIVE! in the Crossroads will be one to remember! All events take place at Mid-America Arts Alliance headquarters, 2018 Baltimore in Kansas City, MO.

Exhibition: Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art
6:00–8:00 p.m.
Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art features used automobile hubcaps upon which artists from around the globe focused their technical skills and creativity to reinvent an often-discarded car part. The exhibition tour will launch in November 2015 and includes 35 objects selected from the Pennsylvania based Landfillart Project, founded by Ken Marquis. Currently, these artworks are being prepared to go on tour, and we will present a small collection of pieces in a special preview. To learn more about Second Time Around, visit the ExhibitsUSA website.

Performance: Katy Guillen & The Girls
7:00 p.m.
This rockin' Blues/Roots power trio from Kansas City will get your attention, and keep it. Guitarist/lead vocalist and principal songwriter Katy Guillen not only has a wealth of rock and blues styles under her belt, she's also an accomplished Flamenco guitarist, which makes for a truly distinctive style. Bassist/harmony vocalist Claire Adams and drummer Stephanie Williams provide a super-tight, high-energy foundation for their powerful songs. If you like your blues with real melodies, intelligent, soulful lyrics, and just a touch of the Clash, you will adore this band!

Professional Development Opportunity: ArtsMidwest Performing Arts Conference

ArtsMidwest is bringing its annual conference to Kansas City, MO, on September 9–12, 2015.
