FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Just Like Me

Just Like Me, opening on [opening date] at [your institution], is a dynamic exhibition of illustrations from children's books, artists' self-portraits selected from a book of the same title, and fine art prints, paintings, drawings, and photography. The self-portrait, a revealing art form, reflects the personalities and inventiveness of these extraordinary artists. From the realistic, pensive pose to the metaphoric portrait, the art is filled with the unexpected.

A diversity of ethnic backgrounds, styles, and media are represented in Just Like Me. Japanese American, African American, Latino, Jewish, Native American, and Australian-born American artists use watercolor, collage, pen and ink, mixed media, acrylic, oil, and gouache in the work on display. A personal statement that recounts the artist's childhood memories, family stories, and experiences that influenced his or her decision to become an artist accompanies each self-portrait.

[In this paragraph, provide details about any activities you plan in conjunction with the exhibition. Also include information about museum/gallery hours, admission costs, and a phone number to call for additional information.]

Many of the artists whose self-portraits are collected in the book Just Like Me are well-known, award-winning fine artists who have chosen to illustrate children's books as a vehicle to share their cultural experiences. Artwork from fourteen children's books is highlighted in this colorful exhibition designed to delight and encourage aspiring artists of all ages.

Just Like Me is curated by Sylvia Nissley, an independent curator who previously organized Shared Stories: Exploring Cultural Diversity, a highly successful exhibition of illustrations from children's books that toured several years ago with ExhibitsUSA. The exhibition is organized and toured by ExhibitsUSA. The purpose of ExhibitsUSA is to create access to an array of arts and humanities exhibitions, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in local communities. ExhibitsUSA is a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance, a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1972.
