The Artist in the Studio

Picture of the Hands-On Studio Exhibition

Installation at Birmingham Museum of Art; courtesy Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, Alabama

The Artist in the Studio is a unique museum experience designed to allow children and their families to be artists and to meet artists. Unlike most art exhibitions, in which touching the objects is strictly forbidden, this one invites the visitor to be a participant in the art-making process—to see, touch, and experience art in its various stages of creation.

This exhibition consists of three hands-on studios—painting and drawing, printmaking, and sculpture—in which visitors create their own works of art, and reproductions of a Renaissance Studio, a Modern Studio, and a Studio of the Future. This truly outstanding exhibition is uniquely designed to capture the attention of young people and teach them about art by giving free rein to their innate creativity.
