In the last eight years Mid-America Arts Alliance conducted Training Needs Assessments of museums within its six-state region of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. From that research emerged data to reinforce what professionals in the museum field had learned from years of practice and anecdotal evidence – many small and rural museums have the greatest training needs but the least access to resources for training – including time, funding, and connection to other professional resources in their states. Thus, the Hands-on Experiential Learning Project (HELP) was born to begin to meet the needs of these promising institutions.
HELP is a training project developed to address the specific needs of small museums’ staff, volunteers, and trustees. HELP provides museums with on-site, affordable learning opportunities that further skills in areas critical to successful museums today. In 2008-2009, HELP will focus on nonprofit governance training and is currently accepting applications from rural, small, and midsized Nebraska museums. Twenty museums will be selected to participate in the 12 month program that focuses on six essential areas of good governance. Each museum will determine their individual goals and work towards improvement and increasing their knowledge base through:
This yearlong program begins in the summer of 2008. Links to a detailed fact sheet and application for the program are in the menu at the left. Applications are being accepted through June 1, 2008. HELP for small and midsize museums in Nebraska is made possible through the generosity and vision of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency.
