Mid-America Arts Alliance Names Tanya Carson as Director of Communications

Kansas City, MO – Mid-America Arts Alliance announces the appointment of Tanya Carson as Director of Communications. As Director of Communications, Carson will guide and implement all communications activities for M-AAA, including publication of printed materials and management of the organization’s Web site, www.maaa.org. The Communications department will also absorb media relations, which were formerly managed by the Mid-America Arts Alliance Development department.

“I look forward to the opportunity to centralize the communications responsibilities of M-AAA,” Carson said. “In establishing this department, we are demonstrating our commitment to expressing the value of Mid-America Arts Alliance and its programs. It is the opportune time to create a strong focus and clear goals for telling our story. It’s an exciting challenge. I’m thrilled to be the new Director of Communications.”

Carson has worked for Mid-America Arts Alliance since 2001, when she joined the staff as Publications Coordinator for ExhibitsUSA, the national museum service division of M-AAA. She has gradually acquired the responsibilities of steering publications, writing copy, and editing written materials for the entire organization.

As Director of Communications, Carson will also supervise newly hired Communications
Associate Sarah McGreer.

“We are so pleased that Tanya will be at the helm of our Communications department,” said Mary Kennedy McCabe, Executive Director of Mid-America Arts Alliance. “Since she joined our staff as Publications Coordinator, she has done an outstanding job of leading the production of our exhibition catalogs and program materials. As Mid-America Arts Alliance has grown, so has the quantity of our communications materials, and Tanya has handled those increasing demands with professionalism and finesse. I know that her high standards will continue to be apparent in the work produced by her department.”

A native of the Kansas City area, Carson received a BA magna cum laude in English from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. She earned an MA in professional writing and publishing from Emerson College in Boston in 1992. Prior to her arrival at Mid-America, she was assistant managing editor at CRC Publishing Company in Kansas City, a publisher of multicultural grant guides.
