No Boundaries: Contemporary
Basketry Begins National Tour
On February 6, 2004, No Boundaries: Contemporary Basketry,
an exhibition toured under the auspices of ExhibitsUSA, opened at Copia:
The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts in Napa, Calif. The
exhibition includes 30 works that challenge the viewer to think about
baskets not just as functional objects, but rather, as engaging works
of art.
For the past quarter century, contemporary artists have been taking the
simple basket form and pushing it in new and exciting directions. No
Boundaries features basketry fashioned from media as disparate as
willow, electrical wire, grapefruit peel, and aluminum scrap metal. The
12 artists in the show—from the United States and one from Japan—have
used these materials to turn the familiar form of the basket into objects
infused with content and meaning, creating both utilitarian and nonutilitarian
vessels, even abstract sculptures.
Upon closing in Napa on May 3, No Boundaries will continue to
travel across the country to at least eight more venues. A full schedule
is provided below.
No Boundaries is curated by Beth Ann Gerstein, Executive Director
of The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, Mass. The exhibition is organized
by The Society of Arts and Crafts, the oldest nonprofit crafts organization
in the country and a leader in the American crafts movement.
The purpose of ExhibitsUSA is to create access to an array of arts and
humanities exhibitions, nurture the development and understanding of diverse
art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth
of cultural life in local communities. ExhibitsUSA is a national division
of Mid-America Arts Alliance, a private, nonprofit organization founded
in 1972.
