Exhibits USA Launches National Tour of Contemporary Paper Art

Paper Cuts: The Art of Contemporary Paper opens October 21, 2004, at Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery in Cedar City, Utah. The exhibition consists of 40 objects made with paper by approximately 25 American artists.

Papermaking and paper-based art have experienced a resurgence in popularity over the past 20 years. Artists use paper in innovative and exciting ways, sometimes combining traditional techniques with nontraditional materials and processes to create everything from utilitarian objects, such as handmade stationery, to fine-art sculptures. Although all the artists whose work is included in Paper Cuts incorporate paper into their artwork, they employ a wide range of techniques and styles, such as origami, papier-mâché, collage, quilling, and techniques that transform paper from two-dimensional into fantastic sculptural forms.

Paper Cuts is curated by Robert Cugno and Robert Logan of the Media Gallery in Garnett, Kansas. Media Gallery has organized many successful exhibitions for ExhibitsUSA, primarily of contemporary crafts.

Following the show in Cedar City, Paper Cuts will tour nationally to as many as 24 additional venues. More information about this and other exhibitions can be found in the exhibitions pages of ExhibitsUSA's Web site, www.exhibitsusa.org.

The purpose of ExhibitsUSA is to create access to an array of arts and humanities exhibitions, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in local communities. ExhibitsUSA is a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance, a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1972.
