Dürer and Rembrandt Prints Begin Nationwide Tour

This year, museums across Europe and the United States are celebrating the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth. On September 1, 2006, The Trout Art Gallery in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, takes part in the commemoration as the first host for ExhibitsUSA's exhibition The Inspired Line: Selected Prints of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn from the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art.

Even though they created their artwork a century apart, connections between Dürer and Rembrandt’s religious pieces are significant and intriguing. More than forty prints brilliantly illustrate the contrasts and parallels between the two artists’ work. Inspired Line includes several pairs of prints in which each artist executed his own version of the same biblical theme, including The Death of the Virgin, St. Jerome, and The Crucifixion. Visitors will enjoy a rare opportunity to examine several print techniques, including etching, woodcut, engraving, and drypoint.

Following its opening in Pennsylvania, Inspired Line will appear at an additional 14 venues from coast to coast.

The Inspired Line is drawn from the collection of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and toured by ExhibitUSA; funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The purpose of ExhibitsUSA is to create access to an array of arts and humanities exhibitions, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in local communities. ExhibitsUSA is a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance, a nonprofit regional arts organization founded in 1972.
