Application Process


Scene from "Shosha"In order to determine interest in the program, route the tour, and help the dancers prepare, a two-step application process will be utilized. Please review the program guidelines listed below before applying.

1. Download, complete, and return the Intention to Apply Form by November 30, 2006. Begin to arrange for performance venue.

2. Discuss with Headlong Dance Theater the terms of a letter of intent, review the technical specifications for the piece, and continue to arrange for performance venue.

3. Download, complete, and return the Project Application Form by January 31, 2007.

Program Guidelines

Applicant Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must reside in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Texas and be legally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization with IRS 501(c)(3) status or a unit of a state, local, or tribal government.

Project Eligibility Requirements

• Takes place between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.

• Includes at least one performance open and promoted to the general public.

• Features Hotel Pool, Shosha, Mixed Tape for a Bad Year, or other works developed and performed by Headlong Dance Theater.

Scene from "Yonder"• Includes at least one Educational Activity separate from the performance: The educational activity must create a connection between the public performance and the community and may consist of a workshop, master class, lecture-demonstration, pre- or post-performance lecture or discussion, performance for students (separate from public performances), in-school activity involving students, or other similar activity.

If, for scheduling reasons, Headlong Dance Theater is unable to provide a suitable educational activity, you may use artists or scholars/educators from your community to provide this service. This activity must clearly relate to the visiting artist’s performance. Please include applicable resumes or biographical information. Our staff will be happy to provide guidance and technical assistance in developing your educational activities.

• Serve underserved audiences: Through its public performance(s) or educational activity(ies), the project must serve audiences that lack access to performing arts and other cultural activities due to geography, economic conditions, ethnic background, disability, age, or other factors. Project must include this component in order to meet standards set by the National Endowment for the Arts. You will be required to include this information in your application narrative and Final Evaluation report.

Levels of Support

The maximum award will be $7,500. Applicants will receive the following percentage of the artist fee listed in the artist contract (subject to the above limit and available funding.)

• 50% of the total artist contract fee, including travel.

Note: Additional support of 5% of the artist contract fee may be awarded if the applicant is located in a rural community, pending funding availability. Rural status is determined by information from the U.S. Department of Commerce and based on the MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) rating for each county.

 

Ineligible Applications

• Artists appearing as part of benefits or fundraisers are not eligible for funding.

• Producing arts organization, such as orchestras and theater and opera companies, may not request fee support for guest artists appearing as part of the institution’s performances.

Additional Information

• Applicants who have received funding for Regional Touring Program, Meet the Composer, and other Mid-America Arts Alliance programs are eligible to apply. Performance image from Hotel Pool

• Small and mid-sized presenters and presenters that do not usually present dance will be given priority.

• Creative use of project in building or expanding dance audiences, use of educational activity, and use of outreach activity will be considered in making award determinations.

• Funding availability is based upon applicant’s state. Early submission will increase the likelihood of funding.

• Performance of Hotel Pool is not restricted to hotels; college, community center, and other pools are acceptable as well.

Note:
A presenter is not required to book Hotel Pool to participate in the pilot year grant program; Headlong Dance Theater is also offering two more traditional works, Shosha and Mixed Tape for a Bad Year.
