Works on Tour:
Shosa, Mixed Tape for a Bad Year, Hotel Pool

Shosha

Scene from "Shosha"Shosha is a literary and theatrical work of dance theater that examines I.B. Singer's eccentric characters in 1930's Warsaw through the lens of Singer, the author, in 1970s America. The time is 1972, and a revolutional band of performers are intent on getting at the impossible truth of performance by attempting to hide absolutely nothing from their audience. Believing that they can finally free themselves and the audience from their existential shackles, the performers dance beautifully and ridiculously, cajole each other and the audience shamelessly, and change their lines recklessly. Ultimately, the troupe, like the characters in Singer's novel, is on a "soul expedition" searching for the divine in the shadow of war. Premiered at the Wilma Theater: DanceBOOM! Festival.

Mixed Tape for a Bad Year

scene from "Hippie Elegy"Mixed Tape for a Bad Year is a grab bag of dances to carry you through a long, crappy year; featuring “Hippie Elegy,” a comic, summer-of-love-inspired duet, and “Yonder,” a haunting suite set to traditional music from the American South. Mixing dreamy utopianism and searing disappointment, these dances keep bouncing back, coming back to love and life. Premiered at the New Festival.

Hotel Pool

Scene from "Hotel Pool"

In Hotel Pool, Headlong Dance Theater's cultural commentary moves off the stage and into the water for a site-specific dance performance in and around a hotel swimming pool. By transforming the typical hotel pool into a setting for an intimate drama, Hotel Pool investigates some of the truth behind the trappings of our modern world transience and business culture. Marrying the narrative possibilities of the space with the movement possibilities of water, the piece uses the hotel pool as a setting for dreams, longing, and disasters.
