Artpace San Antonio Open Call for Texas Artists / Deadline 11/1/17

Texas Open Call is Artpace’s primary resource for identifying artists who are interested and eligible for participation in their various artist programs. All Texas resident artists who apply will be automatically included in the Texas Open Call database, where their materials and applicant information will reside. The Texas open Call is the only way to be considered for Artpace programs and exhibitions including: International Artist-in-Residence program, Hudson Showroom, Main Space, special projects, Chalk It Up, workshops, and more.
Applicants for the 2019 Artpace International Artist-in-Residence program will be reviewed on a rolling basis by Artpace staff and guest curators. Studio visits will take place in 2018.

ABOUT ARTPACE

Since opening in 1995, Artpace has served as an international laboratory for the creation and advancement of contemporary art. Our residencies, exhibitions, and public programs nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists, while actively engaging youth and adult audiences. Artpace is housed in an 18,000-square-foot facility renovated by the eminent San Antonio firm Lake/Flato Architects. The 1920s building, once a Hudson automobile dealership, is located in the vibrant downtown cultural district, one block from the city’s famous River Walk.

INTERNATIONAL ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

Artpace annually hosts three residencies (spring, summer, and fall). Each residency includes one Texas artist, one national artist, and one international artist, selected by a guest curator. The eight-week residency culminates in a two-month exhibition onsite. The mission of this program is to provide artists with unparalleled resources and support that allow them to experiment with new ideas and take provocative risks. More than 200 artists at various stages in their careers have been selected to participate in the program.
An Artpace residency includes travel expenses, a living stipend, a materials budget, an apartment, and studio/exhibition space. Resident artists have access to fully equipped wood and metal workshops and a video-editing workstation, in addition to technical and administrative support. The residency is followed by a two-month exhibition of the project created, which is documented for Artpace’s archive.

EXHIBITIONS

Artpace has two galleries in addition to the International Artist-in-Residence studio/exhibition spaces. Our Hudson Showroom space features a variety of exhibitions, performances, and programs. Main Space is a public-facing gallery space, visible to visitors and passersby on Main Avenue.

PROGRAMS & SPECIAL EVENTS

Our residencies, exhibitions, and public programs nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists, while actively engaging youth and adult audiences. Each fall we host Artpace Chalk It Up in downtown San Antonio, a festival with 25,000 participants in 2016. Throughout the year, we invite artists to lead workshops during our Family Day events.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

The Texas Open Call opportunity is available only to artists currently living and working in Texas. Texas must be the artist’s primary residence for at least one year. Applicants from other states or countries will not be considered. Current students, Artpace staff, and members of the Board of Directors—as well as their spouses or domestic partners and immediate family—are not eligible to apply. While past Artpace artist residents are not eligible for future Artpace residencies, they may apply to Texas Open Call for Artpace’s other artist programs: exhibitions, educational programs, and special events.
