Kansas City Public Art RFQ Maplewoods Parkway / Deadline: April 6, 2018

The City of Kansas City, Missouri is seeking artists or artist collaborations to work collaboratively within the design process to develop innovative, original Art for the Maplewoods Parkway Project located along North Woodland between NE 96th Street and Shoal Creek Parkway. Total four roundabouts are being proposed along North Woodland Ave at the following intersections: NE 96thStreet and N Woodland Ave, New Mark Drive and N Woodland Ave, NE 106thStreet and N Woodland, and Shoal Creek Parkway and N Woodland, respectively.

BACKGROUND
Thousands of people drive along Maplewoods Parkway every day.  As the parkway develops a variety of maples will transform the road into an Avenue of Maples.  They are looking for artists to offer ideas of how their work can complement and enhance the area’s arboreal beauty on one or all four of the roundabouts on the Parkway.

BUDGET/COMMISSION
Artwork for this project will be commissioned through Municipal Art Commission.  Artists will coordinate work with city staff, and the design team.   The estimated budget for artwork and all related art project costs is $273,000.

ELIGIBILITY
The opportunity to compete for this project is open to all professional artists residing in the United States.  The City of Kansas City does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.  Qualifications by members of the Artist Selection Panel or Municipal Art Commission or their relatives will not be considered.  Experience with public art projects, especially in relation to capital projects, is preferred.  Applicants must be able to work effectively within the project timeline and collaborate with the design team and multiple government agencies.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection panel includes artists and arts professionals familiar with the field of public art, community representatives, Marlborough representatives, design professionals and neighboring businesses.  The panel will select a small group of finalists who’ll be asked to develop proposals.  A stipend will be provided for the development of the proposals/finalist interviews.
The criteria used by the panel will include the artist’s professional credentials as evidenced by the submitted materials.

SUBMISSIONS
Interested artist should submit the following, to be delivered to Elizabeth.Bowman@kcmo.org by 4:00PM Central Time, on April 6, 2018.  Please put Maplewoods Parkway in the subject line.
Submission Materials:

  • Professional resume highlighting relevant previous experience.
  • Ten images of previous Public Art projects.
  • Image list identifying title, date, location, materials, size, budget and commissioning entity.
  • Letter of interest outlining qualifications, interest, and ability to complete the project on time and on budget.
  • Names and contact information of three references.
