The Tallgrass Artist Residency seeks to create connection and conversation across the Great Plains. In the past, the program has focused on applicants based in the prairie ecoregion (← click the link to see a general map of this area). New in 2020, we will accept applications from artists outside of the prairie ecoregion for one additional residency period, treated as an “ecoregion exchange”.

Ideal applicants will have a strong body of work with a unique voice or perspective, a dedication to exploring place, and an interest in participating in a contemporary dialogue.

Commitments:  9 artists/artist teams to participate in two-week residency periods between May and September, 2020, with lodging provided at Matfield Station in Matfield Green, Kansas. Residents are expected to give a public program of their choosing during this two-week period at one of our partner venues. Residents are also expected to participate in a group exhibition and artist symposium on Saturday, October 3, 2020, with up to two nights of lodging provided.

Program Description: The Tallgrass Artist Residency is a unique program that offers individual artists/artist teams time and space to retreat and research in a rural, tallgrass prairie setting. Though the experience is rural, it is not meant to be isolating.
