WHAT IS THE SUMMER EXHIBITION?
The annual Summer Exhibition is up from May 12 through September 22 and open to the public every weekend (including the weekend of our Summer Festival). The exhibition includes the work of roughly 50 emerging artists who have either participated in the Wassaic Artist Residency Program or have applied through our Open Call. The exhibition is housed in Maxon Mills, an historic grain elevator in the heart of Wassaic. View images of our 2017 Summer Exhibition here.
WHAT IS THE SUMMER FESTIVAL PROGRAM?
They curate a program of performance and temporary installation for our Summer Festival, the first Saturday in August — August 4, 2018. The Wassaic Project Summer Festival is a free, annual celebration of art, music, dance, and community, and attracts thousands of visitors a year.
DO I NEED TO APPLY IF I WAS A WASSAIC RESIDENT IN THE PAST YEAR?
Yes, you submit a proposal using the online form and pay no submission fee. Residents from the past year (2017 plus November and December 2016) receive preferred consideration during the Exhibition and Festival selection process.
WHAT KIND OF WORK ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
In our exhibition we show all mediums, including: 2d work, sculpture, video, new media and installation. For our Summer Festival, we curate performance pieces and temporary installations. There is no specific genre we are looking for. The Maxon Mills, the Luther Barn, and the surrounding areas are unique and inspiring spaces conducive to site specific installations and performances. Be as specific as you are able in your proposal as to how your work might integrate into our space. Please show relevant work and tell us how it relates to your proposed installation. Our festival also includes film screenings, dance performances and live music.
CAN I DO AN INSTALLATION OUTDOORS?
Yes! We curate outdoor installations for our Summer Festival program and Summer Exhibition. You can propose an outdoor or festival-only installation using the application above. Be sure to include any available documentation of similar installations you have made.
CAN I DO A PERFORMANCE?
Yes! They curate a series of performances for our Summer Festival, the first Saturday in August. You can propose a performance using the application above. Be sure to include any available documentation of similar performances you have done.
IS IT NECESSARY TO VISIT WASSAIC BEFORE I SUBMIT WORK?
Artists submitting proposals for site-specific installations and performances are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with our spaces and submit proposals accordingly. Preference is given to artists who consider our space in their proposals. Accepted artists will be able to arrange site visits during the spring to work out the details of their proposal. Accepted artists making site-specific installations are required to do a site visit before installing and check in with the Wassaic Co-Directors during install.
